چکیده
Bacteriological and clinical data on 68 children with neonatal group B streptococcal meningitis were analysed as part of a wider study of bacterial meningitis undertaken between 1976 and 1982. Twenty five per cent of patients died and there was no difference in the mortality rate between early and late onset disease. Sixteen per cent of the infants weighed less than 2500 g at birth but in 50% no predisposing aetiological factor was found. Streptococcus agalactiae type III was isolated in 57% of the patients.

متن کاملGroup B streptococci in pharyngeal aspirates at birth and the early detection of neonatal sepsis.
The pharyngeal aspirates collected from 400 babies at the time of delivery were examined for the presence of bacteria, especially group B streptococci. Aspirates from 79 babies were found to contain viable bacteria, including 4 with group B streptococci; one of these 4 babies developed streptococcal meningitis within 24 hours. The group B streptococci were seen on a Gram-stained film of the asp...
متن کاملLate onset group B streptococcal disease manifested by isolated cervical lymphadenitis.
Sepsis and meningitis are the major clinical manifestations of group B streptococcal (GBS) infections in neonates, but GBS can cause a wide spectrum of presentations ranging from asymtomatic bacteraemia to fulminate septicaemia and shock. To our knowledge this is the first report of isolated neonatal lymphadenitis as a manifestation of late onset GBS disease.
متن کاملNeonatal group B streptococcal disease associated with infected breast milk.
Premature triplets each developed late onset group B streptococcal disease over a period of nine weeks. The source of the organism appeared to be expressed maternal breast milk, in the absence of clinical mastitis. Asymptomatic excretion of group B streptococcus in breast milk may be an under-recognised cause of neonatal infection.
